Moving Cross Multi-State lines with a Rented Cargo Trailer

My Experience:

Moving Onwards and Upwards

Are you someone who likes to move? Do you like to take to the road and set your roots down in new places? I love to move and see new places, but I am not a fan of the actual moving process. Packing things up and doing the heavy lifting has never been my forte. The organization part afterwards, that I enjoy!

The moving part I do, only because I have to since I don’t want to pay others to do it for me. What does it cost to rent a cargo trailer?

I like to use cargo trailers for my moves. Not only do I feel like my belongings are more protected, I feel these types of trailers are essential to overall safety if your move is going to take more than one day. I mean you are packing your life up in boxes. Your momentos, your pricey furniture, your vast amounts of clothing.

You want to make sure they don’t grow legs and walk away. I utilize a lock on my enclosed cargo trailer and I have a strong sense of security. I can walk away to go into the store or stay the night in our RV, and I know my things can’t be accessed without my hearing it.

Where To Next?

My husband and I made the move to Arizona and we had to cross 4 states to get there.

It took us all of three nights and four full days, but we made it intact. I swear my husband was a master Tetris player back in the day, because the ideas he had on how we could manage all of our life into a 6×12 enclosed cargo trailer just blew me away. We are talking about a 10×12 storage unit packed into this space.

You should have seen the ingenuity of this man! In a mere few hours, we were loaded and ready to hit the road. These trailers are sturdy for one thing, especially hitting top freeway speeds. Although we pulled it with our RV, it hit some rough terrain and we were extremely grateful that the tires remained steady and the hitch secured.

Our first night on the road, I went to sleep right away.

Knowing that my gear was in no danger of theft, it is worth the extra money to me. Obviously, we could have secured our items down in a utility trailer but knowing that someone couldn’t just peek over the wall of the trailer made me feel that much better.

To tell the truth, we also had some fly away items just stuffed in between boxes, so I probably would have lost those along the move somewhere in the desert, LOL. Cargo trailer VS Open utility trailer

The next day, we were up and going along our journey again. Endorphins were high, as the excitement of our relocation grew. The great open road with all of its beauty and potential. Then about lunchtime, I realize that I need access to something in the trailer. Luckily, the clothes I needed were thoughtfully added towards the end of packing.

It was so easy to unlock and pop open that cargo hold to get my things. Then close it right back up. Nothing had shifted terribly, which was amazing in itself! Considering the mountains we had climbed and the speeds we had traveled, I was surprised. Though I think I told you what an awesome job loading that my husband did, right?!

Be as it may, certain items were easy to get to and allowed me peace of mind to know nothing was broken!

What About the Weather?

Our life was protected from the various elements that we endured along the four day interstate trek. We met with rain, chilling cold, intense heat, and all the while our stuff stayed dry and undamaged. This would not have been the case had we decided on buying that open trailer. Then again, the enclosed cargo space just fit our needs at the time.

Protection and security against theft and weather were key. We had just missed a snowstorm through Northern Nevada, coming in a day after we had stayed the night. Imagine if we hadn’t had the trailer we did. I don’t like to. Once we hit the southern Nevada and western Arizona heat, we were also grateful that everything was tucked away from the sun rays.

We have seen first hand what sun exposure does over the long term and it isn’t pretty.

We Made It!

Coming into our new hometown, the trailer made me proud! It had persisted through various mountain passes and pothole roads and came out the other end with no new scratches or tire damage. I call that a win! We opened it up and unloading was easier than loading, thank goodness!

All in all, our trip south was a success and I am so thankful for having a secure and reliable trailer to haul our life with us.

Owning Versus Renting

I will always recommend owning your own trailer over renting. Wanting to purchase a cargo trailer? Check out 7 of the best cargo trailer brands.

Although our circumstances didn’t allow us to travel with our own purchased trailer, we intend on getting one for all of the above reasons I have mentioned. We attempted to purchase a used one prior to our move, however it just wasn’t in the cards.

Renting a cargo trailer was quite pricey for those four days, but the alternative was a big moving truck and we just didn’t need that kind of space. Your cargo trailer will pay you back tenfold over the course of its lifetime by purchasing up front. Depending on your usage, you are looking at a pretty penny when you rent from any company.

Our trip wouldn’t have been the same without this sweet little cargo trailer. We may have ended up with a nightmare of broken or lost items. Considering the little we did bring with us, it would have been a substantial loss. We highly recommend these trailers for any move!
